Empowered by Data: Boosting Colorectal Cancer Screening in Minnesota

By Jess Donovan, MPH – Clinical Measurement Analyst

Colorectal cancer screening is an essential tool for early detection and reducing cancer-related mortality. In 2023, the statewide screening rate increased by nearly 3 percentage points, rising from 67.8% to 70.4%.

A key factor in this shift was the 2022 update from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), which lowered the recommended screening age to 45-75 years. As expected, this change initially led to a dip in overall screening rates in the first year as the health care system and patients adjusted. However, in the second year, screenings among the 45-49 age group increased by 13 percentage points, marking significant progress.

So, how do we keep momentum going? Collaboration.

Health care providers, community organizations, and public health agencies across the state are continuing to lead this work. To support efforts, analyzing screening data and identifying gaps in care can help expand outreach and education. Data-driven strategies can play a key role in ensuring screenings are accessible to all populations.
